zettelkasten mental model of book and articles

Table of Contents

_20240123_104804screenshot.png Every book(or article, presentation – in fact, every serialized presentation of ideas) can be viewed as a zettelkasten, or a network of zettels.

In this sense, the primitives of manipulating contents of the book easily became manipulating subgraphs of the zettelkasten, which is inherent in the zettelkasten method(review).

1. list of primitives provided by this mental model

1.1. read book - extracting zettels

The most basic primitive of reading a block of text, once just reading, in this model naturally adviced with a goal to extract zettels - they just are there under the hood.

1.2. learn topic - extracting subgraph of zettelkasten

In a collection of text that is large enough, there is likely many topics, not every others is closely coupled.

To build base knowledge or getting to know ideas on a topic, you just need to extract the subgraph under the topic (with strong connections)1

Footnotes:

1

zettels of 2 topics may well be seperated entirely, with casual “these 2 ideas share a common pattern” connection, which is not neccesary to understand either.
